Ureteroscopy is an endoscopic procedure in which a small instrument is passed through the urinary tract to reach a ureteric or renal stone. The stone may be fragmented and extracted according to the case.
URS is commonly considered for ureteric stones and selected renal stones. The appropriate approach depends on stone size, location, anatomy, infection and previous treatment.
A ureteric stent may be placed temporarily before or after treatment in selected cases. Stent-related urinary symptoms can occur and are usually discussed during planning.
No skin incision is usually required because access is through the natural urinary passage.
Infection, bleeding, ureteric injury, residual stone and need for staged treatment are possible.
Stone clearance depends on stone burden and anatomy; some patients require more than one procedure.
Treatment decisions are individualized after appropriate clinical assessment.
